He worked at the Douglas Hospital, where a pavilion has been named in his honour, for 60 years. A companion of the Order of Canada, he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 1998. He was a pioneer in the treatment of schizophrenia and depression with drugs, and also believed that biology plays a role in mental illness. "Telling his story is a bit like telling the history of psychiatry in the 20th century," film-maker Catherine Mullins, who is making a documentary on his life, told the National Post. He died Apr. 7, 1999, aged 87. His commitment to patients was so strong, reported the Post, "that he and his family spent each Christmas Day at the hospital, shaking hands with every patient."
