Jack Brummitt was from a medical family: two great-uncles, his father and his brother all devoted their lives to general practice. He had a lifelong interest in public health and preventive medicine. At the Department of Health and Epidemiology at UBC, his major interest was the early detection and treatment of deaf children. He served as vice-president of the Medical Society of Pan-American Doctors A.C., which promotes a scientific and cultural exchange among physicians from Mexico, the USA and Canada. His brother, Dr. Bill Brummitt, remembered him this way: "Jack participated in establishing the Outreach Community Centre in Vancouver. The centre followed a model adopted throughout North America in the late '60s and early '70s - a truly community-based project where even the carpentry and redecoration was shared by local residents, physician-teachers and students. When he got older, Jack's skills as an amateur computer hacker were an inspiration to his technophobic age-mates, and he applied his innate teaching skills to support the efforts of a number of expatriate retirees to stay tuned in to the electronic age." "Few people know," reported the local paper, "that if a patient didn't have enough money to pay for medicine in those pre-drug-benefit days, Dr. Michael would send him or her to the drug store anyway, and the amount would go on his account."
