He was 85. Dr. Kippen was president of the Manitoba Medical Association before assuming the CMA's top post in 1970. He later recalled medicare's heady first days: “The most obvious change was that doctors were now paid for everything they did ... so their incomes increased by up to 50%. Later on, as I had always warned, the squeeze came.” After his first 30 years in practice — he also served overseas during WW II — he predicted a future today's doctors will recognize. “We have now reached a stage … where even the government cannot afford the cost of health care if no limits are applied. Government has limited money. If all of it is spent on health care, who will build the bridges and roads and schools and provide the essential services? When it comes to satisfying the increasing aspirations and demands of the public with respect to health care, there is no limit — it is a bottomless pit.” The son of a rural GP, Dr. Kippen's service to medicine will be recognized by a fund to support rural students entering medicine at the University of Manitoba. He is survived by his wife, Marga, and children Dr. Robert, Duncan, Stacey and Heidi. **Aikins**, Joseph A., Barrie, Ont.; McGill University, 1952; RCAF, WW II; former staff, Royal Victoria Hospital.
