Their disease had been evaluated by repeat cytology, colposcopy and colposcopically directed punch biopsies, with endocervical curettage when necessary. This conservative treatment eradicated the disease in 147 (89.6%) of the patients. The remaining 17 underwent complete reinvestigation. The focal residual disease in 12 was successfully treated by conservative means--repeat cryotherapy, focal electrocautery or punch biopsy. The other five required either cone biopsy or hysterectomy because of more extensive lesions.
