Muller has developed strains of transgenic mice to study the roles of certain genes in the development of mammary epithelial cancer. Genes of particular interest include neu, which codes for a growth factor receptor, and c-src, one of the first oncogenes ever described. The outcome of this work is a better understanding of how breast cancer starts and of the prognosis for patients with certain forms of the disease. It is expected that murine models will also be used to test the efficacy of new therapies for breast cancer.
