Table 4:

Preventive measures to minimize occupational exposure to beryllium

Prevention categoryExample of preventive measures
1. Elimination and substitution
  • Job retraining — to alternative role without beryllium exposure

  • Metal substitution — replace metals containing higher levels of beryllium with those containing low or no beryllium

2. Engineering measuresLocal exhaust ventilation: remove beryllium particles at the source before worker exposure
3. Administrative measures
  • Job assignment — alternative tasks that reduce exposure to beryllium

  • Area restriction — restrict access and number of workers to areas with high beryllium exposure

  • Education — on exposure risks and health hazard of beryllium, with mention of becoming sensitized

4. Personal protective equipment
  • Respirators* — full-face air-purifying respirator with P100 filters

  • Work clothes — coveralls, gloves, hoods, boots and helmets that protect the skin from exposure and secondary respiratory exposure

  • * Specific respiratory type depends on anticipated airborne concentration.

  • Sensitization can occur through the skin. (2)
