This led to a position at a medical college in Manchuria, and while in China he met an American missionary, Mary Gauntz, and she would be the love of his life for 64 years. The war interrupted his China years, and the road then led to Northern Ontario, where he became the first doctor to join the Red Cross Community Doctor Service.
