Died of cancer May 23, 2003, aged 88; survived by his wife, Frances, who stated: “He was fluent in 5 languages and was a world history buff, winning several competitions in his formative years.”

Died of cancer May 3, 2003, aged 64; survived by his wife, Sandi, and 5 children. “His military career began when he joined the Black Watch at age 16, and it ended as honorary colonel of 15 Medical Company in Edmonton. He served briefly with the CFMS in Bosnia in 1994, and in 1997 he was appointed honorary physician to the Queen.”

The Globe and Mail reported: “On the one hand he was a left-leaning softie whose passion for public service took him from the poorest of Nova Scotia's poor to AIDS-ravaged Africa and beyond. On the other hand he could be an aloof, some would say arrogant, hard-liner whose tough-love takes on patronage and government spending cost him his political career.”
