According to Stedman's Medical Dictionary, tympanitic is in fact a synonym for tympanic. Both are derived from the Greek word tympanon, meaning drum. Therefore, authors Dmitry Guller and David Bach are quite correct in their use of the word 'tympanic' meaning resonant.

While the case report of Guller and Bach is interesting, I was dissapointed that they did not find an ear in the belly. The word "tympanic" refers to the middle ear. Could they mean "tympanitic?"
