Bastedo, Donald Lou Alexander, Kitchener, Ont.; University of Toronto, 1946, pediatrics. Died Sept. 1, 2006, aged 83. “Don was the beloved husband of Sally Caroline (Breithaupt), beloved father of Mary Louise of Richmond Hill, Paul Alexander (Ellen) of Huntsville, Frank Louis (Helen) of Mount Forest and James Donald (Brenda Hans) of Yellowknife and beloved grandfather of Clare, Patrick, Tim, Cecilia, Sonya, Peter, Jacob, Jaya and Nimisha. Predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy and Jean Anne, both of St. Catharines and survived by his brother Edgar (Ted) of Oshawa. After graduating from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1946 and completing a residency in pediatrics at Sick Children's Hospital in 1950, Dr. Bastedo was a much loved pediatrician for countless children and their parents in Kitchener-Waterloo from 1950 until 1990. He was past President of the Kitchener Rotary Club and founding member of the K-W Unitarian Church. A great pianist, he played piano at Probus Club and was an enthusiastic supporter of the K-W Symphony.”

McKeough, Liam Logue, North Sydney, NS; Dalhousie University, 1949, general surgery. Died Aug. 15, 2006, aged 81.
Rebello, Denise Marie, Thornhill, Ont.; University of Delhi, New Delhi, India, 1958, anesthesia. Died Sept. 2, 2006, aged 74. “Denise will be forever loved and dearly missed by Melville, her devoted husband of 40 years. Beloved mother of Steven (Carrie) of Belleville and Ryan (Lisa) of Hamilton, Ont., cherished grandmother of Nicole and Natasha and loving sister of Cynthia (Joe), Emile (Winnie) and Frank (Jola). Denise spent her working life as an anesthesiologist in England and Canada where she was well-respected by the medical community. She will be remembered for her spirituality, devotion to and love of her family and her zest for life. An energetic and independent woman who never allowed age to determine how she lived her life.”
Sigurdson, Frank Thomas, Okanagan Falls, BC; University of Alberta, 1959. Died Aug. 29, 2006, aged 70.
Sirek, Otakar, Toronto; graduated in Czechoslovakia, 1946. Died May 5, 2006, aged 84. “In 1950, at the invitation of Charles Best, Dr. Sirek joined the University of Toronto's medical faculty as a post-doctoral fellow and progressed through the ranks to full professor, teaching and conducting research in the Department of Physiology. During his long career, Dr. Sirek and his graduate students and co-workers conducted research on the physiological roles of mammalian hormones, building on the foundation of research in endocrinology established earlier by the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of insulin by Frederick Banting, Best, J.J.R. MacLeod and James Collip in 1921. Among his many research contributions, Dr. Sirek extended the work on insulin secretion to include the interrelationships between secretion of pituitary growth hormone and production of insulin and glucagons by the pancreatic islets. His work was recognized by several awards, among them the Charles H. Best Prize, the Hoechst Prize and the Starr Medal. Dr. Sirek was also active in the wider professional community, where he served as associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology.”
Valentine, Anthony Seymour, Winnipeg; University of Cambridge, 1954, family medicine. Died Aug. 24, 2006, aged 78. “Tony is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 48 years, daughters, Alison (Kelly), Pamela (Judi) and sons, Michael (Amy) and David. Tony was born in Birmingham, England and served with the RAF during the Berlin Airlift. After graduating from Medical School, he joined Her Majesty's Oversea Civil Service and was posted to Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he met Mary, his bride-to-be. During his professional life, Tony was Past President of the Manitoba Society for the History of Medicine, Past President (1976) of the Manitoba Chapter of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and Manitoba's Family Physician of the Year, 1991. He remained active in retirement as a research volunteer with the Western Canadian Aviation Museum and Editor of the 500 Wing RCAF Association newsletter, The Pegboard. Tony and Mary travelled regularly and completed an around the world tour in 2000. Tony is fondly remembered by friends, family and colleagues for his dedication to his various interests and hobbies, including completing the Manitoba Marathon 3 times, the first at the age of 51, and obtaining his solo pilot's certificate. He was a voracious reader with particular interests in medical and military history.”
