Burditt, Anna Mary, Riverview, New Brunswick; Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, 1961, family medicine. Died Dec. 15, 2007, aged 78. As president of the New Brunswick chapter of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (1969–71), Dr. Burditt was the first women president of a provincial chapter. She was also an assistant professor of family medicine at McGill University in Montréal, Quebec. “Anna took early retirement due to ill health and while housebound earned a master's degree in sociology from Dalhousie University [Halifax, Nova Scotia]. She pursued her interest in the early detection and treatment of alcohol abuse and developed a workbook on alcohol programs that became an Internet course, reaching family physicians across Canada and on 4 continents. From her apartment in Halifax, Anna taught both family medicine residents and Dalhousie medical students.”
Cram, Robert (Bob) Walden, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, 1943, general surgery. Died Dec. 11, 2007, aged 89. During World War II, Dr. Cram was a Surgeon–Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy. His many appointments and honours include having served as president of the Saskatoon and District Medical Society and president of the Saskatoon Fish and Game League. He also coached for a local hockey league and took many Boy Scout groups on canoe trips in the 1960s. In retirement, he contributed to the Western Sportsman and wrote Doctor's Cemetery, a memoir of his years in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. Dr. Cram was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, and sons, Bruce and Doug. He is survived by 3 sons and 5 grandchildren.
Fallis, Barbara Mary, Orillia, Ontario; University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, 1975, obstetrics and gynecology. Died Dec. 7, 2007, aged 63. “At the cottage at Bruce Beach on Lake Huron she learned about native wildflowers and the green flash. She tried to rid the land of garlic mustard and hopes that someone else will carry on.” She is survived by her partner, Jeff Miller.
Gravel, Yvon, Montréal, Quebec; Université de Montréal, Montréal, Quebec, 1961, anesthesiology. Died Dec. 12, 2007, aged 73.
Holloway, Glen Arnold, Thunder Bay, Ontario; University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa, 1976, obstetrics and gynecology. Died Dec. 2, 2007, aged 56. Dr. Holloway “came to Canada in 1989 and to Thunder Bay in 1994 where he quickly established himself as an outstanding gynecologist specializing in infertility and new surgical procedures, particularly those for endometriosis.” He is survived by his wife Elena, sons, Michael and Stephen, and stepchildren, Vitaly and Nadya.
MacFarlane, Thomas William Robert, London, Ontario; McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, 1976. Died Dec. 14, 2007, aged 61. At the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Dr. MacFarlane was assistant professor of medical biophysics and the director of Health Services, Student Health, Workplace Health and the Staff/Faculty Family Practice Clinic. He also founded the Student Emergency Response Team. “A mentor to many and supporter to all, Dr. Tom will be greatly missed.” He is survived by his wife, Penelope Ann, and children, Rebecca Jean, Ruth Margaret and Thomas Luke.
MacPhail, Archibald Sinclair, Napanee, Ontario; University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, 1952. Died Dec. 19, 2007; aged 87.
Phelps, Albert Henry, Chilliwack, British Columbia; University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, 1947, general surgery. Died Nov. 29, 2007, aged 87. “Dr. Phelps was born in Toronto, 1 of 6 children, and had to go to work to help support the family in the Depression years, entering an apprenticeship in the tool and dye trade in 1937. During those working years, up to 1942, he went to night school to complete senior matriculation, and then gained entry into the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, and graduated in 1947. During his career as a general surgical specialist in Chilliwack, British Columbia, patients were his primary concern and he was highly regarded by his colleagues.” He also served the British Columbia Medical Association as a member of the Executive Committee and chairman of the Reference Committee. Dr. Phelps and his first wife, Mary, had 3 children, Susan, Barbara and Stuart. He and his second wife, Linda, had 1 son, Christopher.
Roy, Devabrata, Truro, Nova Scotia; graduated from medical school in 1979. Died Dec. 6, 2007, aged 52.
