Dr. McIntyre makes a compelling argument that food insecurity should be a public health priority, and that effective solutions likely require redistribution of wealth in the population. It is unfortunate, then, that she characterizes the evidence from Anderson et al that supports her argument as “voyeuristic epidemiology”. Epidemiologists are not voyeurs; they use best methods available to shine a spotlight on health inequalities, inequities, and injustices. The evidence produced is exactly what is needed to call policy-makers to action, especially when that evidence draws attention to health disparities that are being ignored. To describe such research as voyeurism undercuts the crucial role these studies play in being a catalyst for change.
